Various dates in July: Cantilena Music Festival –

Islay hosts Cantilena’s professional musicians and students of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland who together bring their unique sound of chamber music to residents and visitors, with many of the concerts being held in the famous Islay Malt Whisky distilleries.

Concerts will take place on the island from Sunday 3 July – Friday 8 July 2022 as below:

Sunday 3 July, Islay Gaelic Centre
Opening concert with music from Bach, Mozart and Beethoven.
Monday 4 July, Laphroaig Distillery
Student Showcase featuring the 2022 Cantilena Scholars from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Tuesday 5 July, Lagavulin Distillery
Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Rossini and Giuliani.
Wednesday 6 July, Islay Gaelic Centre
Enjoy solo works from Artistic Director and guitarist Allan Neave and pianist, Nicholas Ashton.
Thursday 7 July, Ardbeg Distillery
LeClair, Farina, Telemann, Purcell and the Boccherini Concerto with cellist, Martin Storey.
Friday 8 July, Bruichladdich Village Hall
Final celebration concert including works by Strauss, Sibelius, Vivaldi, and Elgar.

Wednesday, July 6; Music and Whisky Tasting at the Gaelic Centre, Bowmore, presented by Martine Nouet, whisky and food writer. Enjoy tasting four Islay single malts and listen to chamber music played by Cantilena musicians. The event begins at 2pm and drivers’ drams ar available. Thursday July 7, Natural History Centre, Port Charlotte. Archaeology event 6pm. Learn more about the history of the island and about the ongoing archaeological excavations here. Flint napping demonstration (6pm) from Will Attard. Tea, coffee and cakes will be served. 7pm: “Searching for the Vikings on Islay” – learn more about a possible viking house on Nave Island, and excavations at Olaf’s farm from this talk.

July Art Workshops at RSPB Loch Gruinart Create your own Islay souvenir and learn some new skills by joining us and local artists for a workshop at Loch Gruinart nature reserve.

Mosaics: 6th, 20th and 28th of July, 2pm-4.30pm Join local mosaic maker Emma Baker for a workshop in our Visitor Centre, overlooking the beautiful Gruinart Flats. Emma will help you create a piece of artwork drawing inspiration from Islay’s wildlife and landscapes.

Watercolours: 13th and 27th of July, 2pm-4.30pm Local artist Dietmar Finger will guide you through sketching and painting your own landscape or still life at an outdoor location on the reserve or in our Visitor Centre, depending on the weather.
